Building a serial cable

How to make a Treo 650 Serial Cable

Credit for this cables creation goes to Mines from TreoCentral. He created this and took these photos!

First off you are going to need a future dial cable for early LG phones. According to Mines at Treocentral this is a #19, although I found the earlier ones to work also as long as they have the center little box on them (refer to the pictures) (~$25). Make sure the chip inside the center box is a PL-2303.

And also a Tungsten T5 USB cable, travel cable or other cable with the full connector that fits the Treo 650. The cheap ones on eBay ($5 + s&h) work fine.

1. Now, you want to open up the connector that will hook to the 650 (some are clips, others have screws). Desolder every wire.

2. Next you want to take apart the phone connector on the future dial cable. Chop it off keeping the stress rubber and as much of the wires as you can.

3. Now you need to solder the 650 connector onto those wires. Look at the ones in the center box and find what color your TX, and RX are according to this picture:

4. Now, this next picture is a little poor but shows the 650 connector pinout roughly. We only care about pins 8 (Digital GND), 10 (TX) and 11 (RX). Connect pin 8 to the same wire that connects to the bigger gnd connection on the back of the PL-2303 board. Connect Tx to Rx and vice versa.

5. Now you simply need to fit it into the case and clean it up... Those three pins are all you need. Download the USB driver here and then connect the cable. When asked select the folder where you downloaded the driver.

6. Lastly, goto bitpim.sourceforge.net and download the latest copy. Install it and try to connect to your phone! For verizon conversion I will setup another instruction page. Enjoy!
