Sprint Treo 700wx

Fact: A screenshot has been released, that may or may not reveal the name of a windows mobile sprint treo, called the treo 700wx. Here is the screenshot:
Image
Fact: The verizon treo 700w was short on ram, limiting the overall sucess of the device.

Anything beyond that, to include a vast number of tech blogs, are mere speculation. The original image itself could have been fabricated for all I know. But by coupling the two above facts, many speculate a vastly improved windows mobile treo with double the memory.

"Oh, why dont you lift the hood and slap another ram chip in that sucker..." While thats a good idea, it doesnt really work that way woth how palm has designed the treo 700w. The processor is a pxa272, very similar to the pxa 270 that is used in many windows mobile devices, but includes 32MB of memory on board. Palm did that so that they wouldnt have to buy expensive ram chips. This decision seems to have doomed the windows mobile treo based off of that chipset. The cost of redesinging the chipset just for sprint would not offset any potential profit. It is my opinion that the treo 700wx is just the sprint name for the now common treo 700w on verizon. If anyone has any information to the contrary, I would love to hear it. Please do not include speculation, wishywashy whining, or links to tech blogs that dont contain any more information than what is presented here. Just facts please.

Actually, te ram problem with the 700w is related to only having 32 meg ram in a device that runs a ram hungry OS. Most wm5 devices have 64 megs ram at a minimum... They could change this chip with a better one, but it might require a few changes to the mainboard and a slight programming change... While this is possible without TOO much effort, they would have to re-test the hardware afterward which involves development cost.

Furthermore, if they did do this for sprint, verizon would sue their pants off... They would have to release it to both... And verizon would most likely sue if they didn't give a exclusive on it to them first... As such, I find it highly unlikely and completely speculative that any memory enhancements will be present.

We have some information from an unverified source stating that they have the phone and that the memory situation looks like this:

Under Program:

Total: 57.45 MB
In use: 9.77 MB
Free: 47.68 MB

I am a bit skeptical at this, seeing how i have had a 700w from verizon and currently have a xv6700. My 6700 has all junkware removed and from a soft reboot the os is taking up 17mb. I too am hoping that the sprint 700wx has the memory increase as i would like to come back to my seros.

MY THOUGHTS: I think this device may have a memeory increase. My reason is this: Although i have my personal bad mouth sessions on sprint, i dont believe they have complete idiots working in sebu (the depot. that makes these choices). After all the issues with verizon 700w's mainly due to RAM, i dont believe they would agree to take ont his device if they didnt increase usable ram.

It is confirmed that the 700wx has 64mb available to the user. Get ready for lawsuit city if Shadow is right.

CONFIRMED:

Yes go sprint, after all the worthlessness that your company proved to me, you have done something right , forced palm to give usable memroy for a wm5 device. You might have just won me back as a customer!

That does seem like a really low amount of memory in use. I do recall that palm had slimmed down WM5 to run on the 700w's miniscule amount of memory, but the claims of wm5 running on >10KB does sound fishy. The 6700's that we can get our hands on to cross verify all report a range of >17MB to >20MB with different programs running. Either there is some data reporting error from 2 different 700wx's, or there is something about WM5 on the treo.

Re: Sprint Treo 700wx

I used Voice Command for the first time tonight, it's so cool just being able to say "call so and so" and it does. Or "what's my next appointment" and it tells you. I hadn't realized this was builtin, it's great for driving.
