Not much to report here - I'm trying to get the linux kernel loaded into memory properly so that I can jump to it. I'll probably need to get myself a serial cable so that I can better debug the kernel boot process. Right now, I can't really see anything that happens after I jump to the kernel, making it pretty difficult to see if I'm on the right track!

Thankfully, lots of work was done with Garux to investigate a lot of this stuff. I know I'm on the right track, at least.

Some stuff that we need to do (in rough order):

1. Get the SD card reader working to load the kernel. This is far easier than the ymodem over usb method I'm using now.
2. Get the serial UART working (and get me a serial cable ;)). This will let me debug the kernel.
3. Get the framebuffer up and running. This will give us boot messages from Linux, making it easier to figure out what is happending.

Anyone interested in helping technically is welcome to join us on the irc channel.

I mananged to get Linux past the decompression stage and into the booting phase! It shows the boot console with the tux logo and everything!

To get this working, I needed to hack the LCD stuff to just use the previous initialized state. I can't figure out the right registers to get it working properly through linux.

I need to add an initrd, but I think we'll get ourselves to a command prompt soon!

It should hopefully be both. I managed to talk to the GSM radio via the bootloader, so GSM phones will likely be usable under Linux as well.

Here's some screenshots!

hi,

irc.freenode.net - htc-blueangel

when you're closer to a running kernel and GSM,
drop by say hello, because getting a phone program
to run has already been done for the PDA-phone known
as the XDA-IIs, called gomunicator.

Quick update - we got the SD card reader working tonite on a 512MB card, but my Sandisk 2GB card doesn't work at all. I hope to have this sorted out soon, but we should have the ability to boot from a root fs image on the SD card soon!

what about the keyboard driver? Any luck with that?

Is there a blog or something somewhere detailing your progress?

The keyboard driver is working, but needs a keymap setup. As it is we can't get any of the option keys to work until we do.

Try logging into the irc channel as listed at the header of the forum pages. That's where we discuss stuff as it happens.

I got the keymap figured out. I'll post a new initrd tomorrow that has all the keys working...

Today, we got X working (GPE even) for the first time. Although it was short lived with no touchscreen driver working yet...
