GSM
Global System for Mobile communications. In the rapid growth of analog cellular telephone systems in Europe in the 1980's, the several incompatable standards restricted cell phone use and expansion. GSM is the result of a combined effort to stanardize European cell phone networks and subsequently became a worldwide standard.
In the United States and Canada GSM networks use 850MHz and/or 1900MHz.
