You might want to take a look at the Treo Linux project:
Released in late 2004 this is one of the most popular phones ever to come out. With a very large user base and being the phone that started this site, it's got a lot of potential. With prices on it coming down, and the capabilities of it running linux for home automation this device is certainly a good candidate for a lot of "thinking out of the box" projects.
