HTC is a Pocket PC Development company. They also had a hand in the treo 650. The HTC universal looks nice, but there are a dozen of so nice PPC's on the GSM networks. As you have said yourself on the chat, GSM is lame in the usa.

The HTC universal is a PPC based GSM smartphone that is what everyone wished HTC apache PPC 6700 would have been, and will hopefully be relesed at the same time. There are no CDMA equivelents. It is somewhat large in comparison to the wizard and the apache. Because it is a GSM phone it is numbered amoung a lot of leading edge smartphones. We are more interested in the apache 6700 because there are seemingly few CDMA PPC smartphones.

What are you trying to find out? The Universal is a brick... Add mortar and build a wall. The Apache/Wizard is about the size of the treo which is respectable.

i wanna see just how much bigger it is than the Apache/Wizard. I really like the screen size of the Universal, although the Apache screen size might be just right. i would really like the Universal to be a notebook replacement, but with no U.S. CDMA model forget it. the big issue with these devices is mini-SD, the highest capacity of mini-SD is just 1gb a big draw back. why they did'nt stick with SD (which has a 4gb due out soon) is a good question.

Well the Apache runs at 4.25” high (without antenna) x 2.3” wide x 1.0” thick. It weighs in at 6.1 ounces, for comparison the Treo 650 weighs 6.3 ounces and the Treo 600 weighs 5.9 ounces

The Universal is not nearly as large as shadowmite thinks, although at 10 ounces there is definitely a lot of mass to it. It is 5.1" high x 3.25" wide x 1" thick. And with no CDMA and a aproximate going price of ~$1200 a laptop with a cell card is a far better buy.

side by side comparison:
universal...apache
5.1"_________4.25"
3.25"________2.3"
1"____________1"

Here it is alongside a treo 650

The only advantage the universal has over the apache/wizard feature wize is the screen size/rezolution (running at full vga 640x480 vs 240 x 320), the video phone capability, and the full size sd card slot. The slight boost is cpu power is tempered by the increased load on the cpu from the bigger screen. Everything else is a perfect match in the specs.

Conclusion: you and only you can decide what fits your needs. but since there isnt a cdma version of the universal (yet!!!) that kinda reduces your options. Also the universal seems to cost twice as much... so simple "bang vs buck" economics dictates in the favor of the apache/wizard. And in an era of small phones the "form and function" laws also rule in favor of the apache/wizard. That my opinion.

If you guys got a universal, let us know! We would love to hear what a end user thinks of it. Is it really as powerful as the rumors claim?
